The fortress of Pignerol, in Piedmont, stood as one of Europe’s principal state prisons in the seventeenth century. First a Savoyard stronghold, then gradually brought under French rule, it became a strategic place of confinement for political prisoners, men fallen from grace, and figures power wished to erase without any public trial.
