In the Sun King’s Shadow is a historical novel set in the margins of power, at the heart of the seventeenth century and the reign of Louis XIV.
It does not tell the Sun King’s story as History teaches it, but the one that unfolds in corridors and antechambers, in quiet missions, coded letters, and silent loyalties. The narrative follows two men who share a name without being the same man: Louis Le Prévost du Barail, a Picard vicomte in the King’s service, who rises from cadet to governor of Landrecies; and Henri de Barail, a Gascon gentleman called to serve the duchesse de Montpensier and, through her, the Court’s most sensitive affairs.
Around them move lesser figures — valets, soldiers, messengers — of whom the archives keep almost nothing, yet without whom nothing functions at all. The novel explores the constant tension between rank and body, duty and desire, the loyalty men display and the private fractures that neither sermon nor war can silence.
